Supporting Parents

At Greenleys First School we are very aware of the increasing on-line life that our families and pupils are a part of.  We aim to support parents by making them aware of issues and concerns around different aspects of technology today. We do this so that parents are able to better guide their children and support them in becoming safe and responsible digital citizens.

What is cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is when someone uses the internet or digital means (including mobile) to upset or humiliate others. Unfortunately, many people engage in cyberbullying without realising the seriousness or consequences of their action.

Parent/carers may find the UK safer Internet Centre or the NSPCC Cyberbullying a useful online resources.

Which apps are safe for my children to use?

As a school we are aware from talking with pupils that they sometimes have access to apps, internet or game console material that may not be appropriate for their age. Most game consoles will have clearly marked age limits that parents should be made aware of but this isn't always easy to tell with apps or internet bases material such as You Tube.

To help with choosing appropriate apps and games parents may wish to visit the Internet Matters  or Common Sense Media pages which lists lots of apps with age appropriate information, such as You Tube Kids and BBC CBeebies Storytime.

Are social media platform safe for my child?

To help parents know which, if any, social media platforms are safe or suitable for young children parents need to consider the age of their child and the age limit of the social media platform. The NSPCC Social Media page will help parents to understand the risks of social media as well as offering tips to help children stay safe on social media.

In particular the page on NSPCC Parent Controls is very useful in helping parents to set up parent controls on the home Wi-Fi, games consoles, mobile phones, apps and search engines.

How does the school help my child stay safe on-line?

As a school we have various policies in place to ensure that we reduce the risk of pupils being exposed to any inappropriate on-line material, including secure firewalls and filtering systems.

As part of our on-going teaching of computing and in lessons when internet based research is carried out, teachers discuss e-safety matters with children in the same way that they teach them about other aspects of keeping themselves safe, such as road safety or misuse of drugs/medicines.

You can read our on-line safety policy by visiting the policies page on this website.
